Hawaiian is Nation's Most On-Time Airline for 5th Straight Year

HONOLULU, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing a remarkable streak of on-time consistency that began in 2004, Hawaiian Airlines led the nation carriers in punctuality for the fifth straight year in 2008, according to today's release of the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) Air Travel Consumer Report.

Hawaiian had 90.0 percent of its flights arrive on time in 2008, which placed it 9.5 percentage points ahead of the second-place finisher and was 14.0 percentage points better than the industry average. For December, Hawaiian led the industry with a 79.6 percent on-time rate. (To meet DOT standards, a flight must arrive within 15 minutes of schedule to be considered on time.)

Hawaiian was barely edged out of the top spot for fewest misplaced bags, breaking a streak of three years in which Hawaiian was the nation's best at delivering bags to its customers. Hawaiian finished second nationally in 2008 with an average 2.97 mishandled baggage reports for every 1,000 passengers. For December, Hawaiian finished second with 2.76 mishandled baggage reports.

Hawaiian ranked second nationally in 2008 for fewest oversales at 0.07 percent for every 10,000 passengers, and also finished second in the fourth quarter at 0.04 percent.

Hawaiian is the largest provider of transpacific air service to Hawaii from the Western U.S., and is also the leading carrier for interisland service within Hawaii.

The DOT report covers 19 airlines, including nine carriers providing service to Hawaii. The report is available online at http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports/atcr09.htm.
