HONOLULU – Jul. 3, 2007 - Hawaiian Airlines topped all carriers in three major areas of customer service in May, ranking #1 nationally for punctuality, best baggage handling and fewest flight cancellations. The findings were included in the monthly Air Travel Consumer Report on airline service, released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
Hawaiian had the best on-time performance in May with 92.8 percent of its flights arriving as scheduled, exceeding the industry average by 14.9 percentage points. It marked the 40th month out of the past 43 that Hawaiian has been the nation's most punctual carrier. (To meet DOT standards, a flight must arrive within 15 minutes of schedule to be considered on time.).
For the second consecutive month, Hawaiian also scored the nation's highest rankings for both baggage handling and fewest cancelled flights. In May, Hawaiian had an industry-low 2.70 mishandled baggage reports for every 1,000 passengers, and only 10 flight cancellations out of 4,707 total flights, or 0.3 percent, also tops among airlines.
In addition, Hawaiian ranked third for fewest complaints in May at 0.34 percent, with DOT receiving only two complaints compared to 587,017 passengers carried during the month.
The DOT report covers 20 airlines, including 10 carriers providing service for Hawaii. The full report is available online at http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports/atcr07.htm.
