U.S. DOT – #1 for Punctuality, Fewest Flights Cancelled and Baggage Handling
HONOLULU –- For the second consecutive month and the third time in five months, Hawaiian was the nation's best airline for on-time performance, fewest flights cancelled, and baggage handling in August. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today issued its monthly Air Travel Consumer Report for August showing that Hawaiian's quality of service scored highest of all airlines.
Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian's president and CEO, said, “Our two busiest months of the year were two of our best for service. It's a tribute to how Hawaiian's employees rise to the challenge and keep giving their best to our customers.”
Hawaiian finished #1 nationally for on-time performance in August with 97.4 percent of its flights arriving as scheduled, which was 22.2 percentage points above the industry average of 75.2 percent. This marked the 22nd straight month dating back to November 2003 that Hawaiian has led the airline industry in punctuality. (To meet DOT standards, a flight must arrive within 15 minutes of schedule to be considered on time.)
In addition, Hawaiian had the fewest cancelled flights nationwide, with only three cancellations out of 4,382 total flights for an industry-best score of 0.1 percent. Hawaii's largest and longest-serving carrier also topped all carriers when it came to handling customers' luggage, with only 3.21 mishandled baggage reports for every 1,000 passengers carried.
In the category of consumer complaints, Hawaiian ranked eighth overall even though DOT received only four complaints compared to the more than 530,000 passengers that Hawaiian carried during August.
The DOT report covers 20 airlines, including seven carriers providing service to Hawaii. The full report is available online at http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports/atcr05.htm.
