Hawaiian Tops DOT Air Travel Performance in January

HONOLULU – Mar. 11, 2009 - Hawaiian Airlines scored the nation’s highest marks in January’s Air Travel Consumer Report, issued today by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), ranking as the #1 carrier for on-time performance, fewest flight cancellations, and fewest misplaced bags.

Hawaiian led all airlines with 90.8 percent of its flights arriving on schedule during January, exceeding the industry average of 77.0 percent by 13.8 percentage points. Hawaiian has been the nation’s #1 carrier in punctuality for five consecutive years, from 2004-2008. (To meet DOT standards, a flight must arrive within 15 minutes of schedule to be considered on time.)

Complementing Hawaiian’s on-time excellence in January was its standing as the nation’s top carrier for fewest flight cancellations. Only 30 of Hawaiian’s 6,273 total flights, for an industry-best score of 0.5 percent, were cancelled during the month.

Hawaiian also ranked #1 nationally in January at taking care of customers’ luggage, reporting an industry-low 2.01 mishandled baggage reports for every 1,000 passengers served.

Hawaiian is the largest provider of transpacific air service to Hawaii from the Western U.S., and is also the leading carrier for interisland service within Hawaii. The DOT report covers 19 airlines, including nine carriers providing service to Hawaii.
