Multiple Factors Diminish Hawaiian Airlines’ Punctuality in August

Hawai‘i’s largest and longest-serving airline maintained #1 ranking for 12-month period

HONOLULU – Hawaiian Airlines’ North America and Neighbor Island flights arrived on schedule 81.5 percent of the time during the month of August, dropping the airline to third among U.S. carriers for punctuality, according to data released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Hawai’i’s flagship carrier maintained its top ranking for on-time performance over the past 12 months.

“Several intersecting factors led to the delivery of our worst on-time performance in more than a decade,” noted Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian Airlines president and CEO. “More flights and more passengers created a shortage of gates to handle our flights at Honolulu International Airport and led to delays in processing passengers through customs and immigration during the mid-morning peak. This delayed our ability to turn our flights,” Dunkerley explained.

“Abrupt changes to the routing of aircraft in and around Honolulu meant that flight times were longer than scheduled, and, to top it all off, construction related to the airport modernization project created additional congestion and delays,” Dunkerley continued.

“Airport modernization has been a long-time coming and we are certainly very happy to see it underway, but we have felt and will continue to feel short-term pain associated with this project,” added Dunkerley. “Our employees have been working with airport staff to manage these challenges and will continue to do so.”

Hawai‘i’s largest and longest-serving airline provides daily non-stop service to Hawai‘i from 11 gateway cities in North America – more cities than any other carrier – using Airbus A330-200 and Boeing 767-300 aircraft, making it the only carrier to offer wide-body, twin-aisle aircraft for all transpacific flights. Hawaiian Airlines also operates approximately 160 daily flights between the Hawaiian Islands using Boeing 717-200 aircraft.
